A new research project supported by Oxford Health Charity, has been launched this month. AiM (Arts Impact Measured) at Home, a collaboration with the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Primary Care Health Sciences Department, The University of Southampton and Oxford Health Community Research team, will evaluate the effects of arts-based activities for South Oxfordshire patients cared for at home.

The aims of this project are to:

  • Understand the effects of arts activities for patients after receiving treatment at home.
  • Test the potential of a pilot creative arts intervention to improve patient wellbeing (including perception of pain and impact on isolation).
  • Learn about the impact of supporting arts-based projects on staff wellbeing.

The arts-based activities will be similar to those received by patients in hospital through The Oxford Health Arts Partnership (OHAP).

During the project patients in the Abingdon area who are visited by the district nurse or the community therapy service, will have the opportunity to take part and choose the type of art form they would like to try out (visual arts, craft, music, or dance). They will then be visited at home by an artist (or virtually if preferred) once a week for 5-6 weeks. Following the arts activities, each participant will engage in a post-activity interview with the research team to share their experiences and feedback

Artists will work with participants at their own pace to complete activities over approximately an hour-long session and each visit will also be attended by a volunteer who will be helping the artist and the research team with the study.

The research team is also available to attend staff team meetings to discuss the project.
