Patients in OSRU picked up paintbrushes and craft supplies again this week for their weekly fun and colourful Creative Health session led by local artist Vickie Kearney.

Funded by Oxford Health Charity, this Music and Art programme will be running for six months on Wednesday mornings and will help stroke patients develop their motor skills and gain new creative skills.

These inclusive sessions welcome any patient who wants to take part, offering opportunities for them to try out different arts and crafts and enjoy calming, creative mornings together.

Speaking to the Charity team about the benefits of these sessions, Vivienne Southcott (Clinical Lead for Occupational Therapy) commented:

“People benefit from the mindfulness and relax whilst completing these activities which is a relief from the focus upon their stroke. This can relieve some of the frustration which they feel. They get so much pleasure from what they make and this builds self-confidence. It also gives ideas for new hobbies or how to adjust a present hobby when they get home.”

As well as offering opportunities for art-based activities, patients also have the chance to enjoy music sessions, run by local musician Kate Wilkinson, as part of this programme.

Open to all, these musical interludes create a lively and relaxed space where patients can enjoy live performances and sing along to some of their favourite songs – helping to provide a break from the usual ward routine and boosting wellbeing.

Kate shared her reflections on bringing these music sessions to OSRU:

“It is such a pleasure to see patients’ faces light up when they hear their favourite song performed. They often say that the music has lifted their spirits and has been a highlight of their day!”

We’re thrilled to hear how this fun and inclusive charity-funded Creative Health programme is bringing a real sense of joy to the ward, with patients proudly displaying their artworks and smiles often lasting long after the craft materials have been put away or music has stopped!
